Getting To and Around Houei Xai
Flights from Vientiane to Houei Xai depart three-four times per week. Mekong ferries operate throughout the day between Chiang Kong, Thailand, and the Houei Xai checkpoint for 40 baht per person plus 10 baht per bag. Buses leave Luang Namtha at around 09:00 and 13:30 at 55,000 kip per seat. Minivans are also available. A speedboat leaves Luang Prabang at 09:00 and takes about 8-9 hours, and Luang Prabang’s two-day slow boat launches at 8:30 and overnights in Pakbeng. Please check departure times, frequencies, and prices as they are subject to change.

Tuk-tuks are available in Houei Xai and scheduled song taews (pickup trucks with benches) depart to villages from the morning market. Motorcycles can be hired from Vang View Tours, and Bo-Sapphire Tours rents bicycles, as well, there are other rental services.

Post and Communications
The General Post Office is on the main road just east of the town’s center, and offers postal and EMS services, DHL, Western Union, faxing, and international telephone calls. Phone cards and Lao SIM cards are widely available. There are several internet shops in Houei Xai, and the speed is reasonable.
Where to Stay
Houei Xai and Bokeo have some 5 hotels and 36 guesthouses with rooms ranging from 200-600 baht (most prices are quoted in Thai baht or US dollars, but can be paid in kip). Among the most reasonably priced near the town centre are the Gateway Villa, Thaveesin, Sabaidee Guesthouse and Houai Xai Guesthouse.
Where to Eat
Houei Xai has around 22 restaurants serving Asian and Western dishes, and scores of noodle shops cooking up cheap, delicious food. Among the more popular dining spots are the Riverside Houaysay Restaurant, Sousada Restaurant and the Meuang Neat Restaurant, which prepares an interesting Lao spaghetti dish. The morning market’s “fast food” stalls offer ping (grilled meat) and noodle soups.
Banks and ATMs
Houei Xai’s BCEL and Phongsavanh Banks, located on the main street, have ATMs that accept foreign cards, and dispense kip. Each of the town’s four banks offers exchange services. There are also several Western Union outlets.
