Houei Xai Town Tour

A cycling/motorbike/tuk-tuk tour of hillside Houei Xai Town winds past ancient temples, a market and a French fort. Start the morning by climbing the steep staircase to Vat Jom Khao Manilat across from the pier road and Gateway Villa in the center of town, and then rest on the peaceful grounds. Constructed around 1880, the teak temple remains in pristine condition, and is joined by a sizeable golden stupa, majestic gong tower and wonderful view.

Next, explore Fort Carnot, a French garrison build in 1900, and still in good condition. Details of the fort are presented in the section: “10 Highlights along the Tea Caravan Trail”.

The ascent to Vat Pha Thad Souvanaphakham (Vat Phakham) begins east of the town center, just past the speedboat port. Originally built in 1022, the hilltop’s small temple has been restored several times. Also on the complex are a golden stupa and a row of eight golden Buddha images in different positions.

Further along the main road, spend some time at the market, which along with fresh foods and products for daily use, has shops selling comfortable rattan stools and baskets along with Bokeo wines, whiskies and fruit-flavored liqueurs.
