Suggested Itinerary
From Muang Khua or Oudomxay, a 4 or 5-day loop through the province gives you the chance to:
  • Take a local boat trip between Muang Khua and Hatsa on the wildest part of the Nam Ou.
  • Discover Phongsaly town’s surroundings: stroll through the old town; climb the Phufa Hill and enjoy its stunning 360-degree view; visit the ethnic museum and learn more about the province and its people; taste the rare tea from the 400-year-old plantation at Komaen village (18km from Phongsaly Town); or walk to the green whisky producing village, enjoying the breathtaking view of endless mountain landscape, before trying a shot of the country-wide famous alcohol.
  • Go on a 2 or 3-day trek and experience real village life in an off-the-beaten-track area. You can start either from Phongsaly, Boun Neua, Muang Khua or Boun Tai.
  • A daily bus brings you to/from Phongsaly from/back to Oudomxay, Muang Khua or even Luang Prabang.
