Wat Ongtue in Vientiane, Laos

“The temple of the heavy Buddha” houses a Buddha image which weighs an incredible ten tones and is 3.40 m wide and 5.80 m high.

The image was made with bronze along with the images Phasouk (which sunk in the Mekong River), Phasay (Nongkhai) and Phaseum (Bangkok), led by King Sayasetthathiraj in 1566. The last three images were lost to the Siamese in 1828.

Wat Ongteu was founded by Phaya Chanthaboury Pasitthisack during 200 BE or 300 BC and known as Sipoum or Sayapoum. King Sayasetthathiraj later restored it in 1566. It was reconstructed again in 1911.
